We were Team Herman Miller. The excellent Cross Cultural Design teaching team brought together multidisciplinary Stanford d. school students with multidisciplinary students from Peking University and Design students from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing for a six-month design challenge. We worked with Herman Miller Design, renowned for its decades of American home and office furnishings and environments, to explore the needs of the aging population in China, particularly in Beijing. What an honor it was to represent Stanford and, moreover, to gain the confidence of the elders we spoke to. Working internationally with both time and technological obstacles was particularly challenging, yet through this opportunity, we learned that Skype at 7:30am PST and 10:30pm Beijing time is the simple solution to the biggest problem. The rest was forged in the two week-long visits we each had respectively at Stanford and in Beijing.
