In Search Of Roots

I have a passion for teaching. I love facilitating learning. I love making my students laugh. I love relating to them. I love going into a class of young people, capturing their attention, and leaving at the end of the lesson knowing that I have made an impact on their lives. And I know I was good at it. However, there came a point in my career as a teacher when, although I knew I was a good teacher, somehow, teaching was merely intuitive, and that was not enough for me. I came to Stanford in search of roots – roots to anchor my approaches and perspectives of teaching and learning in research. Roots to anchor my design of learning environments and technology use on fundamentals established in the learning sciences.

One of the great things I discovered about Stanford is that there is just so much action going on all the time. As I check out the courses offered in each quarter, there is almost a voice compelling me to take every class there is to take. My goal here was to be equipped to provide instructional leadership in school and my vision was one of transformation of learning environments in Singapore through the use of technology. Hence I sought to anchor myself first on the fundamentals of learning, on research in the learning sciences, and on learning theories.  Along the way, I built in additional dimensions of design thinking and elements of technology, but I never lost focus on my key passion, and that was in teaching and learning. Here's a snapshot of the courses I took in my search for roots ...
